In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month The Rancho Works Cafe is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Rancho Works Program by our newest graduate, Michael Herron!

Mike became paralyzed from a gunshot wound in December 2000 and lost touch with Rancho for many years. In 2020, after being struck by a vehicle, he reconnected with us. Thanks to our outpatient case management team, who consistently followed up and informed him about available services, Mike returned to participate in the Rancho Driving Program with Stephanie Hayes-Jackson and later received Work Rehabilitation services from Denise Ha.

At 49 years old, Mike began working at the Rancho Works Café and Gift Shop in February 2024 — the first job he had ever held! Since then, he has moved into his own apartment and is now living independently.

With the experience he gained at the café, Mike built the confidence to apply for jobs in the community for the very first time. He recently secured a full-time position as a Behavior Intervention Technician with a rehabilitation company that serves children with autism.

We are incredibly proud of Mike and all that he has accomplished. And now, with the addition of our Occupational Therapy Employment Specialists, Behin Behrozi-Tehrani and Wendy Diego, we look forward to sharing even more success stories of Rancho patients finding meaningful employment in the community.

🏅Highlighting the great moments from this year’s Spinal Cord Injury Games! All the athletes brought impressive skill, focus, and competitive energy to every match. Their performance reflected the strength and spirit of the adaptive sports community at Rancho.

Even though the event has wrapped, the momentum continues as we build on the growth of Rancho’s adaptive sports program.

Thanks to the Honda Grant, supported by the @Honda USA Foundation. The Foundation funds programs that remove barriers and expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities, “ensuring that the joy and freedom of mobility can be experienced by all.”

This funding will support a new project where Rancho’s PK Lab will work in coordination with the COACHWELL program to assess player mobility challenges and goals for improving game performance.

From those insights, the team will develop custom assistive devices designed to address real challenges faced by Rancho’s athletes and benefit adaptive sports players across the nation.

We’ll be measuring the impact of these devices and sharing the process and results as the project unfolds, starting with basketball. Stay tuned for updates on how innovation continues to drive performance and accessibility in adaptive sports. 🏀✨

Last Friday, we came together to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. JoAnne K. Gronley, PT, DPT — a teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend whose influence continues to shape our community.

Throughout her remarkable career, Jo embodied excellence in clinical care, research, and mentorship. Her contributions to rehabilitation science, biomechanics, and education left an indelible mark on our field. But beyond her professional accomplishments, Jo will be remembered for her humanity — her generosity, fierce intellect, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those around her. ❤️❤️❤️

The celebration of her life reminded us not only of her immense professional impact but also of the warmth and mentorship she shared so freely. From groundbreaking research to shaping generations of clinicians and researchers, Jo truly lived a life of service and passion.

Her legacy lives on in the science she advanced, the people she mentored, and the friendships she nurtured. We were honored to gather in her memory and grateful for the many who joined us to celebrate a life so well lived.

The story continues through the Rancho Works Program. The program, under Occupational Therapy Work Rehabilitation, builds on that legacy of inclusivity and productivity. The program enables participants (patients) of all diagnoses, abilities and backgrounds to regain a sense of self-esteem and well-being through work-related activities. In the Rancho Works Café the participant’s recovery is promoted by engaging both the mind and body in actual job duties in a real work setting.
