April is Occupational Therapy Month, and we would like to highlight our OT Work Rehabilitation Program by honoring Ofelia Alvarez as our Everyday Hero.
Ofelia became a patient at Rancho following a stroke in 2014, which resulted in aphasia and limited use of her right arm. Prior to her stroke, she worked in computers and customer service for a pharmaceutical manufacturing company.
After completing her outpatient OT, PT, and ST programs, Ofelia was hired at the Rancho Works Café & Gift Shop, where she learned and built job-related skills in a supportive environment. Ofelia was a dependable and determined worker at the Café for nearly three years.
In conjunction with specific training provided by the OT Work Rehabilitation Program, Ofelia was hired for a housekeeping position with Servicon in November 2021.
Jesus, her Servicon supervisor, shared:"Ofelia is assigned to the day shift and provides services to the OPB 3rd floor. She is an outstanding employee and a great addition to our team. Ofelia is a highly motivated and productive worker. She is well-liked by everyone who works with her!"
We asked Ofelia what she enjoys most about her job at Servicon, and she said:"I like it all! I am paired with my co-worker, Santana. She corrects me when needed, but I don’t mind—it helps me perform my job better. I keep learning more and more each day. My bosses are very good people."
When asked, "What are you most proud of?" Ofelia responded:"I am most proud of myself—everything I do. I don’t want anyone to have to correct my work. I must learn how to do things well myself."
Lastly, we asked Ofelia what advice she has for others, and she said:"Keep trying new things and keep improving. We can do it!"
We are so proud of Ofelia and are happy to honor her as this month’s Everyday Hero!
